How to re-enable Dual Sim Dual Standby(DSDS) mode using *#*#4636#*#*

Many of us using android are pretty much familiar with some secret codes which we use to access hidden menus and settings on our android devices. This codes are meant to make tweaking our mobile phones possible, as some settings not available in the phone normally could be accessed using this codes. One of the codes is *#*#4636#*#*. This particular code is used to access hidden settings on mobile network, wifi, and usage statistics. This codes should only be used with detailed guide, as toggling any option on or off  could harm our devices, causing us to lose precious datas sometimes.

In recent Android devices (android 8 above), a new option was introduced into the settings that pop up when you dail *#*#4636#*#*. Its the Dual Sim Dual Standby (DSDS). This setting is what enables our device to access have access to two sim cards at once. Its always turned on at default. Most times, some people fall into the trap of turning if off to see what it does, which leads them to finding solutions online on how to turn it back on ( i was a victim too , on an itel A60). Below i share my experience and how i was able turn it back on to enable my device use two sim again

How To Turn On DSDS Mode Using *#*#4636#*#*

After you dial this code and you toggle off the dsds mode, you may be prompted by your device to reboot in order for the setup to be complete. In my own case, i was getting an error on certain apps immediately after i switch dsds mode off, so i had to restart the device. Now at this point, there are two things involved; Its either your device boots up successfully or you get an  error of a possible corrupt firmware and your device is unable to boot. If your device boot up normally, it should now only be able to access one sim only and without data loss but if your device didn't boot up successfully, then it means the process did not go well and you'll get stuck with an error on your screen.

What should you do when you get an error and your device is unable to boot?

The only option available at this point is to perform a factory reset. Performing a factory reset here means you'll lose every data on your device. If you're okay with that, then you can navigate with the device volume key to the factory reset option and accept by pressing the power button. After doing that, your device  should boot up to normal screen, with all default setting(dual sim also enable).

How do you re-enable dsds if you successfully turned it off?

Now, the purpose for this post. Many people find it really hard to going back to using dual sim after using this setting, as the device refuses to detect the second sim even after toggling on the dsds mode. You may be surprised that even if you perform a factory reset, the problem still remains and you begin to wonder, how can i get out of this? The simple solution is to turn on oem unlocking in the device settings before trying to re-enable dsds mode

How do you turn on oem unlocking on android?

This option is only made available  via the developer options. below are steps to eneble developer option:

  • Go to your device settings
  • Go to about device
  • Scroll to build number and  tap on it ( continue tapping until you see a prompt telling you that developer option  has been enabled)
To turn on oem unlocking, go to developer option that was just turned on, scroll and locate the option oem unlocking. Click on it to toggle it on. You will be prompted if you want to enable it, just click enable and thats all.

If you have successfully gone through the entire process, then youu should by now have both sim card slot working perfectly together again, and most importantly you should have learnt a lesson not to turn on/off setting you are not familiar with especially when using those secret codes.
